According to Mikko Kuusiriti in Discword Monthly, Old Man Trouble is thought to be the devil, but a more down to earth version (think of George Spiggott [Peter Cook] in Bedazzled) He is a sadist who takes a pride in things going wrong. A number of things going wrong used to mean a visit from Old Man Trouble.
Given a little more time, there might have been more connection established between Eskarina Smith, the Wizard born into the wrong sex, and Geoffrey Swivel, a Witch born in the wrong sex and place.

Geoffrey becomes not-quite-a-Witch, capable of most of the same functions but relying on a sort of headology based on persuasion rather than Boffo and fear. He has a rather eldritch goat as a companion and protector rather than Esk's staff. (The concept of a Familiar spirit hasn't been featured previously in the Discworld chronicles, unless you count Greebo's occasional assistance.)

Origin
Geoffrey's father, Lord Harold Swivel, has managed to revive a family fortune almost dissipated by his father and establish himself in a large country estate in The Shires. He has no respect for education but employs a tutor for his three sons at his wife's behest. Geoffrey, the youngest, is the only one to take an interest and reads prodigiously. When his father dismisses the tutor, he turns to McTavish, an old family retainer in the stables, for education in practical and natural areas.

Career
Geoffrey's fondness for animals, starting with Mephistopheles and nurtured by McTavish, finally clashes with his father's values in a fox-hunting episode and he decides to leave home. He has read about Witches and seen them on broomsticks in the sky and decides that this is his calling. Narrative Causality draws him to Lancre and Granny Weatherwax's cottage. Tiffany passes on Granny Weatherwax's broom to him, after the Dwarfs completely replace everything. He shows quite a facility for broomstick riding, even being able to break the sound barrier, which, on the Discworld, crowds lightspeed as well.

He arrives just in time to face a massive attack by the Elves on two fronts and he and Mephistopheles acquit themselves well. He has shown himself capable in the practical elements of Witchcraft and is able to relieve Tiffany Aching of the second steading in Bad Ass which has been imposed on her. He impresses King Verence and Queen Magrat enough that they appoint him Royal Ambassador to the Sto Plains and he is empowered to return home and kick a little sand in his father's face. (Mephistopheles takes the opportunity to plant a kick in the other end.)

There is no mention of a relationship to Tuppence Swivel. If the very literary Tuppence were part of the family he would be considered a black sheep by Harold.
}}
The Dean was a senior wizard at the Unseen University who was a member of the Faculty. He first appeared in MP. Shortly before the events of UA, he moves away to become Archchancellor of Brazeneck College in Pseudopolis. From this point onwards he is instead known as Archchancellor Henry.

Another wizard who holds the post of Dean appeared in S. He is clearly stated to be a separate character to the Dean who appears in subsequent books. In IT, the Dean tells Ridcully "I don't know anything about that [unpleasantness with the Sourcerer]. I wasn't Dean at the time." Similarly, it is not known if another wizard replaced him as Dean after he left.

Not to be confused with Dean B. Smoth, his counterpart at Bugarup University. Dean Smoth, who appears in TLC, was much too helpful to be mistaken for UU's Dean.

At the Unseen University
The "Dean of Pentacles" to give him his full title, is an incredibly obese man ("all of twenty stone" [280 pounds] in IT), who has the dubious distinction of having been granted the nickname "Two Chairs" by Ridcully (owing to the fact that he is so large that he uses two chairs to sit in). He is generally to be found in his study reading a grimoire or in the great hall eating. His job at UU as he, and everyone else, describes it is to sit around, sleep and eat incredibly big dinners. He also attends some of the functions that are held by guilds or clubs around the city on behalf of the University and partakes of other people's big dinners. All of this makes the fact, disclosed in TLC, that he got a Brown for Rowing at UU in his younger days all the less believable.

Seldom knowingly nice or kind, the Dean is an old-school wizard who believes that power should be used, and likes nothing better than throwing fireballs. The Dean enjoys himself immensely when he gets to use high-powered destructive spells, and is thus considered by Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson as too mentally unstable to be allowed to join the Specials at a time of crisis, when fireballs may have been useful, he was politely thanked for his interest and sent home. When he is allowed to fight, he progresses in a series of spinning leaps, shouting "Hut hut hut!" and "Yo!" a lot. He has even been known to tie a rag around his forehead and shout "Bonsai!" - appropriately, as it helps him in his art of Bush-I-do. In the wake of SM, he's been known to don a leather robe at times of crisis, with the phrase "Born To Rune" in studs on the back.

He is like a lightning conductor to any raw magic around, and Ridcully often just observes him whenever there is a clear occult event, as whatever is happening to people will be happening to the Dean at least twice as much. One of the best examples of this susceptibility to whatever occult or semi-magical occurrence is happening, as well as any fads or trends occurs in SM. Who else but the Dean would paint his room black, create a quiff that could take out an eye, or seriously contemplate riding a cargo-cult motorbike when everyone else is only mildly rebelling?

He once spent seventeen years writing a treatise entitled The Use of the syllable "ENK" in Levitation Spells in the Early Confused Period. His family is quite wealthy; as a lad, he'd hung up pillowcases for the Hogfather to fill rather than stockings. He was born in Pseudopolis, near which his father owned a lot of cabbage fields, seven months before Mustrum Ridcully. As a student, he studied in the evenings rather than join his classmates on forays into the city's taverns. In The Science of Discworld II: The Globe, Rincewind mentions that the Dean's UU office features, among the usual wizardly decor, a skull that sings comic songs.

At Brazeneck College
By the time of UA it is revealed he had migrated to Brazeneck College and become its Archchancellor, to the rage of Ridcully and minor annoyance of the rest of the UU staff. He attempted to bring Ponder Stibbons over to Brazeneck as well, but failed, and poached a member of Ponder's department, Adrian Turnipseed, instead. "Archchancellor Henry" challenged his fellow Archchancellor to a football match between wizarding universities over the ownership of the Archchancellor's Hat... but when a seventy-foot tall chicken broke out of Brazeneck and rampaged around the city of Pseudopolis, the match had to be rescheduled until the university is rebuilt.

More recently, the ex-Dean returned to UU to accompany Rincewind in investigating Roundworld's latest difficulties in SOD4. The hostility between the rival Archchancellors seems to have cooled by this point, and they interact with the measured politeness of extreme caution.

His replacement as Dean at Unseen University has not yet been announced.
*In UA, upon being reminded of the Dean's departure, Ridcully comments, "How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless dean!" - a slight alteration from the lament of Shakespeare's King Lear.

* In TLC, the Dean refers to "the memo saying I've been appointed as Dean! That was years ago!"

* The Dean's violent tendencies aren't entirely confined to magic-slinging: he suffered a black eye, and dealt out a bloody nose in exchange, when he got into a fistfight with the Senior Wrangler (The Science of Discworld), defending his opinion that intelligence in Roundworld would first appear on land.

Mr Weavall was an old old old man who was seemingly beyond help. Tiffany Aching used to visit him when she was learning witchcraft from Miss Level (both of her...). Amongst the things she hated were clipping his toenails for him (they used to ricochet around the room), and having him grab her arm and ask her to check in the box under his chair, to see if his money was still there. It was.

At least, it was until she was invaded by the Hiver. Under this malign influence she stole the money and used it to buy whatever she wanted.

Once the Hiver had been defeated she went - heavy of heart - to confess, whereupon she was astonished (and ashamed) to find that the Nac Mac Feegle had replaced it with gold from an ancient king's burial site, making Mr Weavall probably the richest man in the entire country.

Galvanised into action, and out of the semi-stupor he lived in, wherein he believed his children Toby and Mary to be alive and well, he came to his senses, was briefly saddened by the fact that his children weren't alive, but then in a deuced hurry to be off down the lane, walking sticks flailing, to the house of old Widow Tussy, whom he immediately proposed to.

Presumably dead by now, but equally presumably he loved every minute of the twilight of his life.
They set up brightly coloured little booths and tents in a field just outside the village, and would hang about outside until they had a full bench. They had to be driven out by nightfall in case they stole chickens.
They are reported in WFM.

For the Ankh-Morpork district, see The Shambles.

A shamble (also called a shambles) is a handmade device used by witches to detect or amplify magic. It can even be used for protection or to send a spell. The device itself is not magical. Shambles are like spectacles, they help you see, but don't see for you. A conversant witch can assemble a shamble in a matter of seconds using stuff like strings, twigs, leaves, feathers, beads, coloured paper, an egg or even a beetle. The whole thing looks like a "cat's cradle", or some sort of nest made of rubbish. The ingredients are not really important, although the centre should contain a live ingredient (e.g. an egg or a beetle. On one desperate occasion, a Nac Mac Feegle has been employed as the living part of a shamble).

The magic lies in its assembly and use, which is to catch the moment. "The way you tie the knots," said Miss Level, who was a Research Witch, "the way the string runs - the freshness of the egg, perhaps, and the moisture in the air - the tension of the twigs and the kind of things that you just happen to have in your pocket at that moment - even the way the wind is blowing. All these things make a kind of... of picture of the here-and-now when you move them right."

The most effective shamble is the shamble assembled when the witch really needs one, as Tiffany Aching discovered, who could never make one before. If Granny Weatherwax is to be believed, she never made one at all. Couldn't get the hang of them. They got in the way.

Some witches assemble extra shambles or even buy some just to hang around for decoration; these shambles are generally not very useful, but some of these still seem to react to strong magic. When the ambient magic is really too strong, the shamble explodes.

According to the Wizards a shamble is just a crude way to ensure thaumic cusping in phase-space, but what do they know? In fact, though it sounds like a rationalisation for the random assemblage at the bottom of many handbags, plus a lot of copper coinage, a shamble seems to be a practical tool compared to the very rare and expensive thaumometer favoured by the Faculty.

Shambles are first mentioned in WFM, but mostly in HFOS.

Hex, the organic/inorganic/magical super-computer in Unseen University's High Energy Magic Building tended by Ponder Stibbons and a group of like-minded, spotty, if-only-we-had-anoraks undergraduates can be considered something of a 'Super-Shamble'. Its initial components were a mouse-wheel and an ant-colony (the sum in this case is far greater than the parts).

The toad appears in WFM, typically in Miss Tick's hat. He has, if not cold-blooded, a cool view of the world. As the companion of a witch he is not familiar, he says, just slightly presumptuous. When Miss Tick goes away to get help, she tells him to stay so that Tiffany Aching is not left alone.

He is quite well informed on magical subjects, probably because he is a magical creature. He knows he was turned into a toad, but left thinking he was human, and doesn't know why. Never trust a woman with a star on her wand! Sometimes at night he is troubled by the thought that he might have been a toad who got on her nerves.

He travels with Tiffany on her rescue mission into Fairyland in the pocket of her apron, a source of objective if barely helpful advice. "I'm stuck in a wood of evil dreams and I'm all alone and I think its getting darker," said Tiffany. "What should I do?" The toad opened a bleary eye and said: "Leave."

In line with the general theme of awakening from dreams, in the act of saving the Feegles from the one enemy they are really afraid of, the toad remembers how he came to be transformed. The Queen of Fairyland has summoned up lawyers, who know about writing down names, the most terrifying kind of magic. The toad counters these with Latatian phrases, and it comes back to him that he too was once a lawyer.

A Feegle asks, "How come you're a lawyer and a toad?" He recounts that he made legal history by suing a Fairy Godmother on behalf of a client who felt one of her three wishes had not really been fulfilled. The Fairy Godmother made legal history by turning the client into a small hand mirror, and him amphibian.

In the Feegles he has found a vocation, and he stays on with them.

We learn from the Official Court Transcript helpfully provided by the author in The_Illustrated_Wee_Free_Men that the godmother was Fairy Nettle, and the future handmirror was Princess Sandy of the Kingdom of Fallen Rock. The lawyer who appeared for Princess Sandy was Mr James Natter, commonly known perhaps as Natter, Jack.

The Transcript mentions that Mr Natter had become a toad, but does not say anything about Princess Sandy. If she was indeed turned into a handmirror, how does this square with the fact she was due to be a fairy-tale princess, "all foretold, m'lord"?

The fact that negotiations broke down in this rather dramatic fashion may perhaps be attributed to inexperience on the part of the judge, who was presiding for the first time in the Magical Narrative Division.
The clan had a plan. Their fortune had been foretold in a great book: nay, the book. Mr Bunnsy Has An Adventure showed them utopia: rats living in harmony with humans.
They had the fortune (or misfortune?) of meeting Maurice after he too had acquired a Gaspodic level of thought process. With him they embarked on a series of misadventures, utilising the skills of Keith the Piper they became the type of plague of rats experienced on Roundworld in Hamelin. Keith was the Piper and once he'd "got rid" of the rats and been paid, the local townsfolk from towns all across the Sto Plains would have been astonished to know that they all met up round the nearest bend and counted up and divvied out the money.
The Clan nearly came to grief in Bad Blintz, but through ingenuity and bravery they realised their dreams of utopia: now they truly do live in harmony with humans.
The Kite is one of the few fortunate inventions by Leonard of Quirm that got a succinct rather than descriptive name. It also has the distinction as Leonard's only successful flying machine. It is constructed by teams of artificer apprentices on a flotilla on the way to the Edge of the Disc. The Kite is made of very well-varnished wood that does not catch fire, and sufficiently air-tight to go into the void space. Its main components are:
*part shaped like a giant eagle, with wings that can be winched inward and folded up; the crew's cabin is contained in this part.
*the dragon pods associated with this part.
*part shaped like a giant salmon in the grasp of the aforementioned giant eagle, containing more dragon pods.

The Kite is powered by, yes, swamp dragons, the very explosive animal. Leonard has managed to feed them a diet that gave them very hot flames without even a tiny burp.

As each module is used up, the dragons inside are released and allowed to flutter/glide/drift unhurt back down to the Disc. It is understood that Lady Sybil Ramkin insisted on this as her price for providing the dragons in the first place.
Annotation
Compare Swindon, which, until the railway was built connecting London to the (then) second port city of Bristol, was a very minor agricultural village. The Bristol line, the Great Western Railway, was built with the intention of bringing fresh perishable produce swiftly to the markets of the capital, whose river was so foul the local fish was utterly inedible. Swindon (whose name means Swine Hill, or Swine Town) became an oasis of heavy industry in Wiltshire, an otherwise entirely agricultural economy. Until privatisation, it remained a key strategic location in the British rail network, its factories building locomotives and directly feeding them into the system. Today, Britain incredibly imports railway locos and carriages from Europe and - believe this - transfers them to their destination by road. It is possible we've lost the plot somewhere.
Sir Terry Pratchett lives in Wiltshire. Admittedly at the other end of the county from Swindon (Broadechalk, Salisbury) but still near enough for the research to be local and handy.

One of the most dangerous drugs available to trolls, crystal slam is first mentioned in SN. It looks like stone dust, but appears to have little red and blue flecks in it when held to the light. Its manufacture is very difficult, partly because of the unmistakable smell and sparks produced when boiling it. There is a large clue in SN that the manufacture of this lethal drug may be expedited by using crushed and powdered unggue pots stolen from the goblins - another reason for persecuting and enslaving them.

As Sam Vimes explains, the first time a troll tries to use it, it makes him think he can walk through walls - and he invariably does. After a few more times, he drops dead. As a result, Diamond King of Trolls has banned it in Uberwald and all other troll cities (including, of course, Ankh-Morpork). Attempting to manufacture or sell it is a hanging offence, and evidence of manufacture will be rewarded with a very large bounty.

It was extremely unfortunate then that crystal slam together with a number of other troll drugs (including Slab, Slice, Slap, and Slunkie) were what Gravid Rust was smuggling (along with tobacco) into Ankh-Morpork.

It has a certain resemblance to the Roundworld drug Crystal Meth.

(ii) He was moved to whistle, out of pleasure at his sudden good fortune. On stage. This provoked a sudden attack of scenery, which at the time may or may not have been deliberate, and the rat-catcher was soon saying a semi-professional "hello" to the Death of Rats. While initially honoured by this and taking it as a supreme professional accolade, Pounder then uncomfortably realised reincarnation believed in him. A whole new life, or succession, of rodent lives beckoned to him...
(iii) During the great denoument scene at the end of the Opera, when Salzella is unmasked as the Evil Ghost and is gloating about his cleverness, it is revealed that Pounder made the mistake, once having found the stolen cash, of attempting to blackmail Salzella into giving him a share in return for silence. Salzella then showed Pounder that there are other means of attaining a sure silence...

St. Ungulant is an Anchorite, best described as a hermit and one-way prophet: one-way in that whereas many prophets retreat to the desert, receive revelations and then come home and talk about them, Anchorites retreat to the desert, receive revelations and then stay in the desert thinking about them. He worships the small gods, who give him the illusion of fantastic food and drink and other (slightly unmentionable) pleasures in return for his belief.

St. Ungulant is not actually a saint, but someone pointed out the obvious one day, since his full name is Sevrian Thaddeus Ungulant. He resides in the desert on a wheel nailed to the top of a pole. While he enjoys the most incredible (and they really are incredible) kinds of food and vintages, St. Ungulant does crave the odd lizard or the occasional drink of water from a cactus, just for variety in his diet... He is somewhat aware that he is mad, but takes it as something to be enjoyed. His invisible friend, Angus, keeps him company. Angus might be another small god, but (possibly because St. Ungulant believes in him more than the other small gods), Angus does seem to have enough of a physical presence to knock out a lion with a rock.

He is also the namesake of St Ungulant's Fire, which is feared by sailors as the foreboding of dreadful storms.

Annotation
On Roundworld, the Stylites were a form of monk/religious hermit who practiced in Syria and other parts of the Roman Empire (then reduced to the Eastern Mediterranean) and who were frequently compared to saints even before their deaths. They lived a spartan life upon their towers or poles. The most famous was St Simon.

Despite the impression created by St. Ungulant, the Stylites were not hermits but popular characters whose religious teachings attracted much attention from the local people. They were fed and had their waste removed by the help of followers. It should also be noted that their towers were rarely tall and one expensive one was simply using a few cast-off pieces of a column that were stacked on top of each other.

One final note, the Stylite sensation (if senses are the right word) saw little practice in the Latin world. A Goth who tried to become one in Italy had his wooden tower cut down from under him, for example.

Mr Stratford (first name unknown) was a homicidal maniac and all-round nut job in the employ of Gravid Rust, who murdered at least sixteen people and an unknown number of goblins, including the goblin woman whose murder set off the events of Snuff. He was young, with mousy hair and no scars that show--as generic-looking as Moist von Lipwig, in fact, except when he got angry enough for the beast inside to show through. Good with a slingshot, but more often seen wielding a machete or a nasty-looking assortment of small knives. He didn't like water, and wouldn't get on a boat if he could help it.

He came to the attention of Commander Vimes during the latter's investigation of the murder on Hangman's Hill. He tried to outwit Vimes aboard the Wonderful Fanny by disguising himself as the river rat "Eddie Brassbound", but found himself outmaneuvered instead and, after a fight in the wheelhouse, left to go down with the ship.

But Stratford was not an easy man to kill, and he resurfaced on the Roberta E. Biscuit. Where he tried to kill Young Sam Vimes, but found his father instead who had not been drunk as Stratford first thought having seen him ingest many drinks named after him that night. Only then did he meet Willikins who had been disguised as a bartender who made Vimes the "virgin" Same Vimes. He was duly arrested and put on a Watch transport bound for Ankh-Morpork Before he could be conveyed into the hands of One-Drop Trooper, however, the wagon had a nasty collision with a mail coach and Stratford escaped in the confusion. He met Willikins on the road shortly after and was quickly subdued. Permanently.
He is of uncertain age (and teeth), and has an incredibly long beard, that trails, comet-like, behind him. When he stops, by some unknown source of momentum, his beard continues, piling up on his head. His hand is mostly fingernails.

His name is Stump, although, as the man himself reveals at every possible injunction, he is not often stumped. He has been following herming and its various accompaniments- piety, sobriety, celibacy and the pursuit of true wisdom- for the past 57 years. The herming business runs in the family on the male side, with the skulls of various family members kept on a shelf in the grotto. While dispensing the knowledge that all paths lead to the grave and that celibacy should be widely practiced, the profession does have a week's holiday every year, on the basis that one cannot live on snails and herbs of the riverbank alone. It seems, however, that this time is sufficient for his social life, as he has a wife and a son.

Of course, the position of hermit was a noble one in the old ancestral homes- they were like sapient garden gnomes, giving the place a romantic air. They are not allowed to bathe- explaining Stump's whiffiness of the nose- but they did get a salary of two pounds of potatoes, three pints of beer, three
loaves of bread and one pound of pork dripping per week, as well as the aforementioned snails and herbs.

Ted Flutter is a former lackey of Gravid Rust whose testimony was critical in capturing Stratford and exposing the younger Rust's smuggling activity and enslavement of the goblins. He is a simple-minded man who fears everyone to some degree or another. Though he has quite a long criminal record--Feeney Upshot's father arrested him on two dozen separate occasions--it isn't a very impressive one; Flutter is the kind of man who gets dragged along to be the lookout or to carry off the bones.

When he wasn't getting into trouble with the law, Flutter hung wallpaper and ran a turkey farm at his home a quarter-mile outside of Hangnails, though he wasn't particularly good at it and didn't take care of his birds. His work for Lord Rust consisted mostly of rolling barrels around, and he had quite a lot of illicit tobacco stored in his turkey sheds.

He was paid three dollars to help Stratford spread some blood around on Hangman's Hill but ended up witnessing the murder of a goblin woman instead and was subsequently forced to help hide her body. When Commander Vimes and Upshot confronted him about the incident, Flutter turned King's Evidence and revealed everything he knew about Stratford and Rust.

He was presumably convicted of being an accessory to the murder of the goblin girl, but in exchange for his cooperation he was allowed to serve out his sentence in a safe and comfortable cell in Pseudopolis Yard rather than taking his chances in the Tanty.

Praise and Salvation False is a complicated chicken farmer encountered during the events of SN. It is left uncertain what exactly a complicated chicken is, but we find that one of False's hens laid a square egg, which is, at least, thoroughly confusing. It seems that he has weak lungs and (bizarrely) a wooden toe, although the manner of the injury is probably better kept unexplained.

It is a character trait of people with a False name to try and explain the etymological derivation at every possible situation, even when faced with a watery death. In this case, the oft-trotted out explanation is that the family originated with the Klatchian Thalassa, which was eventually mispronounced as the surname we know now. It seems that several residents of the Shire have foreign ancestry.

During the course of SN, he stowed away on the Wonderful Fanny, in order to get to Quirm to set up a chicken houses for his business. However, when the barge was overtaken by Stratford and his crew he hid in a corner under some tarpaulin, on the basis that he had a bad knowledge pf fighting (chickens don't get aggressive) and no weapons. It must be said, however, that, in Sam Vimes' eyes, the contents of his toolbox- mallets, sledgehammers, saws, a crowbar and a large circular awl- came under the heading of 'weapons of mass destruction'.

Annotation
Square eggs have actually been commercially sold in Japan. Apparently the trick is to get the egg the instant it leaves the chicken, while the shell is still soft and malleable (Have you ever wondered how something that big comes out of a chicken without causing her too much discomfort? Hence the slightly teardrop shape of the egg.) While the shell is still warm and plastic, it is put into a glass mould and gently pressed into cuboid shape... the shell then hardens into its final square form, from which it may only be broken, not reshaped.

The obnoxious and unpleasant son of Ronald Rust and heir to the Rust land and title. He is first encountered as the Rust son who was arrested by Sam Vimes and brought before the Patrician for shooting a servant for allegedly setting his boots out the wrong way round.

In FOC he (or his father) was later the chief suspect in paying for an assassin to kill Vimes as revenge. The assassin failed, discovering too late the lengths Vimes had gone to make the Ramkin house a lethal death-trap for unwanted intruders, and was forced to hand over the payment to Sir Samuel while suspended above the dragon pens.

In SN Vimes encounters him again, as a prime mover behind even greater crimes. Gravid Rust is capable of a certain greasy charm, and uses this to persuade people who should know better to join him in a series of escalating crimes and offences. Gravid was responsible for having goblins forcibly taken from Hangman's Hill and shipped for use as slave labour on his tobacco plantation in Howondaland. He also used the same shipments of tobacco to smuggle a number of troll drugs into Ankh-Morpork along with the tobacco. These included the deadly Crystal Slam and others including Slab, Slice, Slap, and Slunkie.

Three years later Gravid attempted to move a second shipment of goblins to Howondaland, also employing the ruthless killer Stratford to tidy away witnesses and lose ends. Here Gravid overreached himself, and by a lucky accident of chance Samuel Vimes was on holiday in the region to uncover this crime.

While most of Gravid's lackeys and smugglers were caught, and the corrupt magistrates removed, Vetinari was forced to point out to the enraged Vimes that slavery of goblins was not then a crime (goblins having being classed as vermin) and Gravid could not be brought to trial for his actions. While Diamond King of Trolls was demanding that Gravid be sent to him for trial (and near certain execution) for his role in shipping lethal troll drugs, the Patrician knew it would not be politically feasible to hand over the son of a prominent aristocrat for trolls to kill, regardless of his crimes. Instead Vetinari told Vimes that he would have to be content with Gravid being disinherited by his father, losing his position and title, and exiled to Fourecks for the foreseeable future. While this would be seen as a terrible fate for most aristocrats Vimes saw it as 'a nice holiday in the sun' for someone who had trafficked in misery and suffering for profit.

In the end, they say all sins are forgiven. Perhaps not all...

Vetinari is later seen ordering one of his dark clerks in Forecks to poison Gravid and make it appear like a natural accident. Vetinari must act in the dark and outside of the Law without sanction, luxuries he envies Vimes, to ensure that there is Justice for the goblins.

Annotations
The term 'Gravid' in Roundworld refers to when animals (fish or reptiles) carry their eggs inside of them. On the Discworld, the term also applies to swamp dragons, so probably has a different meaning. Then again, dragons are more or less reptiles and we don´t know that they don´t carry their eggs inside themselves.

Feeney's grandfather was sailor who brought back his grandmother Ming Chang from Bhangbhangduc. He taught Sam Vimes the move "He Up Down Very Sorry" by example. His grandfather helped him nurture his ability to "read people like books" by taking him around the area, introducing him to people, and telling him their stories. Because of this, he is able to make a very educated guess as to whether you are telling the truth or not and to have some insight into your character.
Stinky is first found on the property of Feeney Upshot after the arrest of Sam Vimes in connection with the suspected murder of Jethro Jefferson. His name comes from his absolute stink. Sam Vimes noted that it wasn't so much a smell as a sensation of your dental enamel evaporating. Stinky was the first to ask the venerable watchmen for "JUST-ICE!"
He becomes the first of the Goblins to become an officer in the Shire. He also becomes an operator of the newly erected Clacks tower although he does not know how to read, as he is a quick learner.
Preston is a young castle guard (under the new Baron Roland) who is perhaps too clever for his own good. So clever, in fact, that he will play dumb in situations where large words would be unappreciated and unhelpful.

When Preston was a young boy, his grandmother used to lay out the dead. It was Preston's job to provide his grandmother with the necessary supplies for preparing the body, such as cloths, warm water, a dish of salt, and two coins for the ferryman. He was forbidden, however, from the actual work with the corpse, on account of his lacking a certificate in "doctrine." (Pills and potions and sawing off limbs and similar.)

Preston is a born healer, if not a doctor. A doctor requires letters put at the end of the name, and those letters are very expensive. The lack of formal training did not stop him from performing surgery on his mum's dog (made him right as rain when he pushed all the bits back in after being run over by a wagon) and on his granny's chickens (curing them of fowl crop, which even a talented pig witch can't do.)

Tiffany Aching finds him fascinating and intelligent, with a rare understanding of the world. Preston shares with Tiffany a delight in language and an imaginative take on vocabulary. He quietly and unobtrusively courts Tiffany, mainly by taking care of her when she is too busy to think of mundane things like sleeping and eating and being there for her when she needs it most.

After Preston assists in her defeating the evil which is walking the world, Tiffany wrests a promise out of Roland that he will sponsor Preston's further education at medical school in Ankh-Morpork. Preston is now presumably a medical student working under Doctor John Lawn.

Tiffany is grateful to and admiring of Preston, even somewhat fond of him. She thinks of him as a "young man of considerable resourcefulness" until Preston points out that he's a year older than she is. By the end of ISWM a mutual romantic interest between him and Tiffany is indicated.
Mrs Proust is the Ankh-Morpork witch and the mother of Derek and Jack Proust. The stones from which her powers originated are the stones within the slime under Ankh-Morpork from which previous cities were constructed. (This is similar to the flint within the chalk that gives Tiffany her powers.)

Growing up, Mrs Proust was the daughter of the city's most talented hangman and ran errands for the warders of the Tanty. She is the owner of the Boffo Joke Shop, where many of the mountain witches get their supplies, and where Derek and Jack work. She is vastly ugly, with a hooked nose and many warts and blemishes. She bases the masks she creates at the shop on her own face. It is revealed that she met her husband at a dance with terrible lighting. They were married for twenty-five years until he died.

Mrs Proust is somewhat more blatant with her use of power than Tiffany or the mountain witches, including enchanting a window so that it throws stones back at people who throw stones at it. This shows she is a very talented witch and one with different beliefs from witches such as Granny Weatherwax. Mrs Proust first appeared in ISWM when Tiffany visited Boffo to get her broom fixed by the identical dwarfs who work there.

Mrs Proust also provides discreet medical services for Watchmen who are too embarrassed to go to Igor and don't want their mother to know. She also has an Arrangement with Captain Angua von Überwald with regard to treating her hardpad. No money is paid, nor do serviceable second-hand clothes or surplus foodstuffs change hands, as they would in Lancre or elsewhere. No: Mrs Proust is a city witch. Hers is a city barter: performing discreet personal favours in the Watch buys favours, if for eg she is banged up in a cell with Tiffany Aching, accused of criminal damage and importing Feegles into the city. Commander Vimes turns a blind eye.

There is a street in Ankh called Prouts. A connection with the wider Proust family cannot be ruled out; witchcraft runs in families, names are matrilineal, and witches have a habit of making an impression.
Molly Petty is the mother of Amber Petty, and wife of Seth Petty.

A mousy woman who is as skinny as a broom, Molly lives in fear of her abusive husband, who makes sure she "walked into a door" regularly. She still refuses to leave him - Tiffany Aching's father surmised that she must feel it's "better to have one husband than none". Mrs Petty is also not very house proud: The front yard a quarter acre of nettles and the house was a mess. She's also a bad cook. Tiffany scared her half to death by getting the Nac Mac Feegle to clean the whole place.

Mr Petty's work regularly leaves her home alone for long periods of time. Tiffany's mother admits she should have spent time talking to Molly, explaining that there are certain social limitations which are imposed by the act of getting married... left to her own devices, Molly tended to, *ahem*, host travellers passing through the village. The "encounters" with these pedlars and travelling salesmen left a certain amount of doubt as to the exact parentage of Amber.

On night after the Scouring Fair, her husband beat her daughter so savagely that the girl lost her baby. Amber was taken away while Mr Petty fled, leaving Molly all alone. Mr Petty returned the next night, and tried to hang himself in remorse for what he had done. Saved from death by Tiffany, his wife took him back, much to Tiffany's annoyance.

She was last seen with Amber and a bashful Mr Petty, at the new Baron's wedding.

Seth Petty (usually addressed as Mister Petty) is the father of Amber Petty. He is described by Tiffany Aching's father as being good at those jobs requiring brawn and endurance but relatively little brain. Seth is, in fact, exactly the sort of man who would wholly justify Moist von Lipwig's description of the out-of-town drovers' pub in Ankh-Morpork, the Butcher's Eagle.

By occupation (and perhaps default) he is a drover, responsible for leading flocks and herds of the Chalk's sheep and cattle to Ankh-Morpork, where the usual processing in the Shambles leads to the butchers' shops being adequately stocked. His work as what can only be described as a pedestrian cowboy keeps him away for long periods of time, during which Amber's mother has tended to... host travellers passing through the village. This leaves Seth with a certain amount of doubt as to the exact parentage of Amber. If he knew either way, perhaps he would not be so filled with rage - Men with limited cognitive power can only get so introspective before the doubt expresses itself through the fist and boot.

Mr Aching says Seth used to be a nice boy - It was just that his father would "lay into (him) just for looking at him in a funny way". It seems he taught his son a lasting lesson: He would grow up into a large, strong man, and use this strength to regularly beat his wife.

When Amber becomes visibly pregnant by her tailor boyfriend - a man despised by Seth as being in a lady's profession - too much ale and introspection at the Scouring Fair finds its way out via his fists. In the family barn, he beats her so badly that she loses the baby, his future grandson. This is too much for the town to bear, the informal orchestra convenes to play the rough music for him. Tiffany Aching saves him from it; she administers a witch's judgement all of her own, then tells him to leave and never return. Even when cornered he tries to fight, but is finally convinced to leave (quickly) by a sample of his daughter's pain.

Despite the warnings, he comes back. Filled with remorse, Mr Petty returns to the barn where his grandson died, making a bouquet of nettles and lighting a candle (in a very flammable building) for the baby. He then attempts to hang himself from the rafters. The Nac Mac Feegle cut him down.

Mrs Petty takes him back, much to Tiffany's dismay, but Amber is taken to stay with the Feegles in the mound. The locals promise to keep a close eye on the Pettys. He is last seen at Roland and Letitia's wedding, looking clean but sheepish by his wife's side.
