Lobsang is a character in The Long Earth. He is a Tibetan motorcycle repairman... who has been reincarnated as a supercomputer. The reasoning was that several sixth generation computers have tried without success to be named a human, but, if it is said that the computer is actually a human being (albeit in an unusual form) there can be no trouble. Any people who try to argue with the practicality of reincarnation will get some very short shrift from the religious community.
He now part-owns transEarth, a company which studies the various Long Earths, since the founder, Douglas Black, offered him a partnership. He does have a sense of humour, as he frequently disguises himself as a soft drinks dispenser.

Annotations
A Tibetan motorcycle repairman who is involved with spirituality - is there an echo of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance here?

Given Sir Terry's era, he may also have fallen temporarily under the influence of (or at least read) The Third Eye, published in the late 1960s I think, and supposedly written by the Tibetan monk Lobsang Rampa, who turned out to be a man living in Hinchley Wood*, which sounds like it really ought to be somewhere in Discworld but is actually on Roundworld after all. But it was surprisingly popular and the first of many books by the same author.

* *Having written the above from memory, I thought it best to fact check a little. According to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobsang_Rampa it was the nearby Thames Ditton, which sounds much more firmly rooted on Roundworld. And the original book was from the 1950s, not the 60s.

Lobsang also has shades of the evolved Hex at his most smug and omniscient.
The Hogfather is originally a winter god. In the deep winters, people of old feared that spring might never again come, so they gave bloody sacrifice of hogs to the Hogfather. Nowadays, the Hogfather is expected to travel in a sleigh pulled by hogs and every Hogswatchnight to bring gifts to all the children, or at least, those who believe in him; this yields a worshipper range of most of the Discworld except for the Counterweight continent and the continent of Klatch. Despite this impressive range, crass commercialization of the holiday compromised the belief in Hogfather, and then interference from the Auditors of Reality severely threatened his existence (chronicled in Hogfather).

His residence is the Castle of Bones near the hub. The Hogfather is an ancient being, who has seemingly kept his present form for some time; in Hogfather, Albert reminisces about his childhood memories of the Hogfather, more than 2000 years ago. The only difference in the Hogfather in that time seems to have been that he did not bring presents, but sausages and black puddings if you were lucky. But you always got a pink sugar piglet in the toe.

He parodies the Roundworld Father_Christmas (the UK version of Santa_Claus)

In the land of pine trees and deep snow and long winters, when the sun is below the horizon most of the day, in the piercing cold it can become a real question whether or not the sun will rise again in the morning. The voice of reason says it will rise, but there are many unreasonable voices in a person. In response to this question, the anthropomorphic wossname called the Hogfather arose. He had many forms throughout the centuries, and the man in the red suit was only the last of them. Susan saw them one after another. His first form was properly speaking porcomorphic, or pig-shaped. It was to this point that he retreated when ambushed by Mr Teatime. Despite his apparent task of distributing presents in the season of goodwill, sustained by the belief of children, on the longest night of the year it is still the role of the Hogfather to ensure that the Sun rises in the morning (comparable to Teppic’s dynasty). It is no small thing to make the Sun rise. When he was able to resume his role, the Hogfather seemed to salute Death as an equal. He did not thank him. “Ho Ho Ho,” notwithstanding, he was not a personification of many words.

When the Hogfather was attacked, Death, like an expert mechanic hearing a change in the sound of an engine, had heard a harmonic change in the music of the universe. He was able to enter the congruent reality of the Hogfather in a way in which he could not enter the domain of the Tooth Fairy. Death applied first aid to sustain belief in the Hogfather among children, and recruited Susan, even Hex.

When Mr Teatime had failed, the Auditors attacked the Hogfather directly, in the form of hounds. It was necessary for Susan, as a human being, to be the one to act to save him. To do this she had to leave behind her inner babysitter, and be with her belief. It was not simple. At a point where the hog she was riding teetered on an icy ridge, precipitous drops on both sides, she repeated to herself, “He’ll catch me if I fall,” but an older voice within her said, “No, he won’t. If I fall now, I don’t deserve to be caught.” As in the case of Death and Miss Flitworth, an anthropomorphic personification was saved by the self-gift of a human being.

Later Susan said to Death, “The sun would have risen just the same, yes?” “The sun would not have risen,” he said. “A mere ball of flaming gas would have illuminated the world.” It would have been a world of oblivion.

The same human capacity to believe which supports the Tooth Fairy and the Hogfather creates the space for meanings such as justice, mercy and duty, which have no existence in the physical universe, to become. What Hogswatch seems to stand for is not that you will get presents if you have been nice, but that what you have done counts for something, and it is known. It matters. “All things strive...” says Hex. Strange though it may seem, given the general immersion of human and human-like beings in the mere business of staying alive, it is towards this point that all things strive. This very line also appears in Dwarf Lore.

Annotation
Some aspects of the Hogfather suggest the anti-Santa Claus who lives on in some German folklore. Yes, Santa delivers presents to the good little boys and girls; but the bad ones had better beware the entity known as Schmutzli or Krampus, who at this season has free rein to punish the naughty with pinches, prods, hair-pulling, or a damn good thrashing with chains. Or even a "gift" of bloody bones in a bag... (thanks to Stephen Fry and QI for information)

Lobsang Ludd was born as one soul with two bodies from Wen the Eternally Surprised and Time. Nanny Ogg assisted at the birth, and witnessed the two souls being born. This can probably be explained by the whole universe being destroyed and recreated in an instant by Time. The two babies were put on the doorsteps of the Clockmakers' Guild and the Thieves' Guild. Naming conventions for the guilds resulted in the surnames Ludd and Clockson.

Jeremy became the best clockmaker of Ankh-Morpork and was chosen by the Auditors to build the new Glass Clock which would stop time. A brilliant clockmaker, Jeremy succeeds. His brilliance does come at a price: all he cares about are clocks, he is not strong in social relations and has to take medicine (closely monitored by the guild) to behave in a socially accepted way. His Igor notices that his extreme sanity and orderliness is just another form of madness.

Newgate Ludd grows up entirely different, baffling people with his speed in stealing things, often small objects. On the run from persecutors he falls, but saves his life by performing the Stance of the Coyote. This is noticed by Marco Soto who sends him to the History Monks to be trained, where he receives the name Lobsang. Mostly because he has such talents he's a lazy student who gets thrown into the care of sweeper Lu-Tze. They both head to Ankh-Morpork, supposedly to learn The Way of Mrs. Cosmopilite, but really to find and destroy the Glass Clock. In the aftermath of the stopping of time, Lobsang meets Susan Sto Helit and together they find his "brother" who got wounded in the events. Their souls get reunited, but Lobsang is his preferred personality. Between him and Susan a romance blossoms.

After restoring the world and the flow of time, Lobsang takes over the job as Time so his parents can enjoy some time off. He meets Lu-Tze in a duel who beats him with Deja Fu, finishing his education and making him a fully approved sweeper.

Mort (short for Mortimer) is a young boy from the Ramtops, son of Lezek. He was very thin during his childhood, and he lived at his father's farm until he was old enough to go to apprenticeship, becoming Death's apprentice at the stroke of midnight. There he learned about the fabrics of time and space, the thin line between life and death, and how to clean out Binky's stable. During the course of his apprenticeship, Mort acquired some of Death's special abilities, such as the ability to see the dead and to walk through walls.

As the book progresses, Mort develops more and more Death-like traits: he learns to speak with the voiceand Ysabell is alarmed to notice his brown eyes have turned to Death's icy blue. Correspondingly, Death himself becomes more human, as if the roles are shifting, and for the first and only time, His voice is rendered in lowercase, and with quotation marks.

However, the first time Mort does the job by himself, he saves someone instead of collecting their soul, causing a rift in time and space, between what actually happened and what was supposed to happen. In attempting to maintain the reality that he created, Mort rebelled against his Master, resulting in a swordfight in Death's own home.

Mort lost, but Death changed his mind about killing him, perhaps due to what Mort said, or perhaps Death saw Susan witnessing the fight, and realised that it was necessary to keep his apprentice alive. It should be mentioned that during Mort's apprenticeship, his father never knew what Mort was doing; he thought Mort was an apprentice to an undertaker, because of his own subconscious unwillingness to see Death.

Mort married Ysabell and became the Duke of Sto Helit. The couple subsequently traveled extensively among the Sto Plains cities, conducting diplomatic visits to discourage wars that the previous Duke - a chance casualty of M - had originally been destined to suppress by force. Both were killed in a coach accident in Soul Music, even though Death had offered them an immortality of sorts in his own realm. Their daughter, Susan Sto Helit, inherited the slap-mark-like birthmark that Death had left on Mort's face.
* The motto of the Sto Helit family is; Non Timetus Messor, which is translated in the article concerning links with the Roundworld heavy rock band Blue Öyster Cult, whose biggest hit record on Roundworld was....
* After the appointment of Mort as the new Duke of Sto Helit, the Sto Helit family coats of arms is, mysteriously, (due to their ties with Death,) a shield with pair of scythes crossed against it, and a hourglass where the scythes cross.
On Roundworld,such a shield was the emblem of a unique New York dining club, who set about methodically ridiculing the susperstition that the number thirteen and the day Friday were inherently unlucky, by deliberately dining thirteen to a table on every Friday the Thirteenth. Active between 1881 and the First World War, the Thirteen Club and its members suffered no greater ill-fortune than would be attributable to chance, and the club emblem on its menus and letterheads was indeed two scythes crossed in front of an hourglass with the motto Morituri Te Salutamus (We who are about to die salute you").
At one point, War refers to Death as "Mort" but the reader later learns that the only people in the room, (other than Twoflower,) were Death, Famine, Pestilence and War. The name might be a possible reason as to why Death chose Mort as his apprentice. When Death first meets Mort and learns Mort's name ('Mort' being the Quirmian word for 'death'), he comments, What a coincidence.
A Discworld celestial year has 800 days and because of some interesting astronomical facts two of each seasons (two summers, two winters, etc.). This leads to the fact that many people actually do not count the astronomical years, but the half-years with 400 days, often refered to as "common years". The half-year has 13 months, listed below. Each month except Ick has 32 days, Ick has 16 days. Each week has eight days. The eighth day of each week is called Octeday.

There are two main calendars in use on Discworld. The Ankh-Morpork Calendar counts full years and starts at the founding of Ankh-Morpork, the University Calendar starts at the founding of Unseen University (in 1282 AM) and counts in half-years. Oddly enough, while the Imperial Ankh-Morpork calendar offers intellectual purity and mathematical elegance, the general populace tends to use the Weird, Wild, Wacky Wizards' calendar, which happens to correspond to the growing season.

Years and centuries
Centuries and years are named. We are currently in the Century of the Anchovy (CJ). It was preceded by the Century of the Fruitbat (MP) and even earlier by the Century of the Three Lice, and the Century of the Cobra (SG).

Notable past years
*The Year of the Lenient Vegetable - in which Bishop Kreeblephor converted a demon to the Omnian faith;
*The Year of the Pensive Hare - the events of UA take place shortly after the New Year celebrations which usher in this year.
* The Year of the Astounded Beetle‎;
* The Year of the Engaging Sloth;
* The Year of the Hyena (mentioned in S)
* The Year of the Notional Serpent;
* The Year of the Prawn (Common Year 2005; Scholar's Year 1657);
* The Year of the Pensive Frog;
* The Year of the Backwards-Facing Artichoke (Common Year 2017);
* The Year of the Scrofulous Vole. (mentioned in CDA);
* The Year of the Justifiably Defensive Lobster (Common Year 2018)

Months Of The Discworld Year
Or rather, of the Discworld's half-year. TCDA clarifies previously opaque or puzzling aspects of the calendar. Quote:
This be for the Common Year, that being the four hundred days that measure the Season from Winter's Edge until the snows come again, and the Hogswatch is celebrated. All Celestial measurements, Observations and notations of Stars, houses of the firmament, and other divers heavenly bodies are taken on the Full Celestial year, of eight hundred days, which emcompasses two common years...

* Ick - only has sixteen days
* Offle - all following months have thirty-two
* February
* March
* April
* May
* June
* Grune
* August
* Spune
* Sektober
* Ember
* December

The year commences on Hogswatch Day and ends on the following Hogswatch Eve.

Special holidays
* Hogswatch Eve, the end of the old common year.
* HogswatchDay (first of Ick, start of the new common year)
* Soul Cake Tuesday
* Day of the Lesser Gods (?same as below?)
* Eve of Small Gods, first midsummer day
* Samedi Nuit Mort (celebrated in Genua)
* Creator's Birthday (28th of April)
* Wear a lilac if you were there day (25th of May)
* Koom Valley Day (5th of Grune)
* Crueltide, half-year point (end of first half-year, start of next)
* Alls Fallow, 3/4 point of 800-day year, the one day when witches and warlocks stay in bed (parodying Halloween), though in Wyrd Sisters, Esmerelda Weatherwax suggests that Hogswatch is the one day witches shouldn't go out, though this may only apply to Mistress Weatherwax, since her arrival may cause people to feel wary rather than jolly.

Seasons
* Spring Prime, first spring
* Summer: mid-point Small Gods' Eve
* Autumn Prime, first autumn
* Winter Secundus aka Spindlewinter: Mid-point Crueltide
* Secundus Spring
* Summer Two: mid-point All's Fallow
* Secundus Autumn
* Backspindlewinter: mid-point Hogswatch

Discworld seasons are 'explained' in one of four paragraphs in the footnote on page 5 of The Colour of Magic. It is written:

"Since the disc's tiny orbiting sunlet maintains a fixed orbit while the majestic disc turns slowly beneath it, it will be readily deduced that a disc year consists of not four but eight seasons. The summers are those times when the sun rises or sets at the nearest point on the Rim, the winters those occasions when it rises or sets at a point around ninety degrees along the circumference."

Zodiac
The Discworld zodiac consists of 64 (8*8) constellations, nebulae or individual stars grouped in thirteen Houses. There may be other constellations that are not part of the zodiac, but it's possible that the Discworld's unusual revolution means that the Discworld sun and/or moon enters all constellations at least once (the "zodiac" is a list of constellations in which the sun or moon [or planets, but there don't seem to be any around Discworld] can be found at some point in time). Roundworld has 88 constellations (1 of them non-contiguous), 12 of which are in the zodiac (a 13th constellation is also technically in the zodiac, but is not recognized as part of the zodiac). According to research wizard "Numbers" Riktor, who meticulously counted them, there are, or were at the time of counting, 49,873 visible stars in the Discworld heavens. Which is ample raw material for the cosmic Rorschach test that creates constellations.

Annotations
* Wezen the Doubleheaded Kangaroo: the first constellation (interesting because the wizards don't seem to recognize a kangaroo when they see it in TLC-- perhaps because it was flattened and had only one head? Although in fairness you couldn't recognize anything else from it's constellation either, and it's never really obvious what is mythical and what isn't!)
* The Two Fat Cousins: possible reference to Tweedledee and Tweedledum?
* The Flying Moose: possible reference to Rocky The Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J Moose
* The Small Boring Group of Faint Stars: Rincewind's birth sign, usually not a wizard's sign. Was much brighter thousands of years ago when the Disc was closer to it (according to TLC), so it's not clear why the ancients called it "faint"; perhaps they knew the Disc would move away from it long-term?
* The Knotted String: possible pun on "I'm a frayed knot" jokes
* Gahoolie the Vase of Tulips: the last constellation (now if we could only find that whale)
* the Triangle, mentioned in TLC, possibly not part of the zodiac

Wrap the hatnote (e.g. disambiguation text) in this template, like so:

<pre>
Foobar
makes:
Foobar

Recommendation
The text should be short complete sentences, and include only the links to the target articles. E.g. at Discworld Calendars:

There are three types of Discworld Calendar that were produced:
*Collectors Edition Calendar: the bulk of the calendars are these ordinary calendars with illustrations.
*Collectors Edition Mini Calendar: the same as above but smaller, only one was produced.
*Day to Day Calendars: Small calendars with rip-off pages, one for each day. Each page featured an illustration by Paul Kidby along with text about the featured character, the information was taken from DC. Two of these were produced.
Collectors edition calendars featuring illustrations of Terry Pratchett's Discworld by various artists.

This article is about the counting and naming of years and days on Discworld. For calendar books like the AGD see Bibliography, for the commercial items see Discworld Calendars.

General

Notable past years
*The Year of the Lenient Vegetable - in which Bishop Kreeblephor converted a demon to the Omnian faith;
*The Year of the Pensive Hare - the events of UA take place shortly after the New Year celebrations which usher in this year.
* The Year of the Astounded Beetle‎;
* The Year of the Engaging Sloth;
* The Year of the Hyena (mentioned in S)
* The Year of the Notional Serpent;
* The Year of the Prawn (Common Year 2005; Scholar's Year 1657);
* The Year of the Pensive Frog;
* The Year of the Reversed Ptarmigan (Common Year 2007);
* The Year of the Revolving Crab (mentioned in WA;
* The Year of the Sideways Leech (mentioned in H);
* The Year of the Spinning Mouse (Common Year 2015);
* The Year of the Talking Frog (mentioned in H);
* The Year of the Sneezing Panda (Common Year 2016);
* The Year of the Intimidating Porpoise (mentioned in Reaper Man);
* The Year of the Backwards-Facing Artichoke (Common Year 2017);
* The Year of the Scrofulous Vole. (mentioned in CDA);

* Offle - all following months have thirty-two
* February
* March
* April
* May
* June
* Grune
* August
* Spune
* Sektober
* Ember
* December

The year commences on Hogswatch Day and ends on the following Hogswatch Eve.

Special holidays
* Hogswatch Eve, the end of the old common year.
* HogswatchDay (first of Ick, start of the new common year)
* Soul Cake Tuesday
* Day of the Lesser Gods (?same as below?)
* Eve of Small Gods, first midsummer day
* Samedi Nuit Mort (celebrated in Genua)
* Creator's Birthday (28th of April)

Seasons
* Spring Prime, first spring
* Summer: mid-point Small Gods' Eve
* Autumn Prime, first autumn
* Winter Secundus aka Spindlewinter: Mid-point Crueltide
* Secundus Spring
* Summer Two: mid-point All's Fallow
* Secundus Autumn
* Backspindlewinter: mid-point Hogswatch
