This is the official “Quickstart” book for the Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork roleplaying game. A Quickstart is a free introductory version of a game, generally featuring basic rules, a pre-written adventure and pre-generated characters. This one involves several members of the City Watch (new player characters) investigating a break-in at the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons. Though it’s not explicitly stated, the adventure appears to be set in the default timeframe for the game, around the time of Thud!.

Blurb

In this pun-filled Quickstart adventure for Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork, a number of dragons have been stolen from the Lady Sybil Ramkin Sunshine Sanctuary. But why? What sort of monster could have stolen these little darlings, and for what purpose?

As an intrepid band of Watchmen, you are charged by Commander Vimes to find out. While avoiding causing any harm to the honest people of Ankh-Morpork*, acting with utmost professionalism, and crucially, avoiding any more paperwork than absolutely necessary.

* All two of them

This 47 page Quickstart includes:

  • The essential core rules of the Narrativium system, built specifically for Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork.
  • An adventure for up to 5 players designed to introduce players and gamemasters alike to the occasionally delightful world of Discworld.
  • A quick background of Discworld in general and Ankh-Morpork in particular.
  • Five pre-generated characters for you to jump straight into the action with.
  • A handy player reference sheet.

Characters

Player characters

All the player characters are members of the City Watch:

  • Detective Bartholemew Hamrahan (he/him) - a zombie who died on duty with the Day Watch back in the “Bad Old Days”
  • Constable Igorina (she/her) - an igorina who has joined the Watch as an “Applied Forensics” officer
  • Constable Cliff (he/him) - an affable public relations troll who was raised by humans
  • Constable Surly Underhand (he/him) - a dwarf born in the Shades, now a crimescene iconographer for the Watch
  • Constable Misbegot & Ampersands (they/them) - a gargoyle member of the Watch who lives on Misbegot Bridge
  • Constable Theodora Millineux, aka “Teddy Mills” (she/her) - an ex-beggar with a pet “informrat” named Janus

Theodora didn’t appear in the original version of the Quickstart as her artwork wasn’t available in time. She was unlocked as the first of several “social stretch goals” during the Kickstarter campaign which funded the game, and added in an updated version released in December 2024.

Non-player characters

Which characters will be encountered depends on the actions of the players, but they will probably meet many of the new characters below.

New characters

In order of appearance in the book, and without enough detail to significantly spoil the adventure:

  • Rufus and Marla - owners of the Lamp and Needles, a tavern on Morphic Street near the Sunshine Sanctuary
  • Sierra - a troll child and patron of Knobbler and Sons
  • Cripus Knobller - purveyor of artisanal coal at his business Knobbler and Sons in Wharfinger Street, Dimwell
  • Mrs Ethin - runs a boarding house in Noontender Way, Dimwell
  • Ms. Erika Lofte - runs the architecture firm Stone on Stone in Waxwick Terrace, Dimwell
  • John Johnson - a surveyor for Stone on Stone
  • Plotz - a free golem working for Stone on Stone as a draftsgolem; possibly named after the place in Borogravia
  • Various swamp dragons, including Ruffly, a Golden Deceiver, and Gunter, a Pixie-Faced Smut

From the books

The investigation is given to the players personally by Sam Vimes, but before play starts, so he does not appear personally.
