Sceptum is an entity or person briefly named by John Lawn in Night Watch as the patron philosopher of doctors. He may well be a Discworld take on Galen or Hippocrates, but in the context, this is a far more cynical medical ethicist whose primary question is always one concerning the ontological and epistemological vagaries of a utilitarian redistribution of economic resources and the aesthetic pursuit of worth, e.g., Am I going to actually get paid for this or is it another pro-bono job?
