Colonel Charles Augustus Makepeace is a retired army officer who has learnt to hold his peace in the presence of his formidable wife. He is first introduced at a dinner hosted at Crundells by the Duke and Duchess of Ankh, where his wife assures him (despite his previous beliefs) that potted shrimp, lobster and seafood of any kind simply don't agree with him. She did, however, reassure him that, despite his enmity with the lower crustacea, he was very good friends with the green salad. Formerly of the Pseudopolis Light Dragons, a cavalry regiment that experimented with a different sort of mount, he is the author of Twenty-four years Without Eyebrows.
