Herbert "Leggy" Gaskin was one of the members of the old Night Watch. His funeral was just before the events of Guards! Guards!. His widow receives a small pension from Sam Vimes.
The nickname Leggy was first mentioned in Men at Arms and subsequently in Night Watch, and might refer to his tendency to chase criminals. His death happened when he actually caught up with a criminal he chased. Remember Gaskin instantly became a slogan for the watchmen to remind each other that chasing criminals was out of the question.
In Night Watch, he was one of the Treacle Mine Road Watchmen to cross Keel's Line, and agree to take part in the revolution against Lord Winder.
