Talk:Librarian

OK, I was just thinking of adding the Librarian's species when I came across two oppossing facts. In the "Discworld conpanion", (IIRC) it is stated as pongo pygmaus (or thereabouts). However, in "Thud!", his species is stated by A.E Pessimal as pongo pongo, which is declared as correct by both Vimes and the Librarian himself. So which is true? -- CommanderJake, AMCW

On Roundworld, it's Pongo Pygmaeus (see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orang_utan.) On Discworld, I'd take the Librarian's word for it. --Old Dickens 21:12, 5 October 2006 (CEST)

In The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch Darwin says Pongo Pongo on page 256 Edbury Press version. --Confusion 20:34, 30 October 2011 (CET)

Very soon, people forgot how the Librarian looked as a human, or what his given name was

I think this was less a case of forgetting and more a case of the rapid turnover of university staff (especially during Sourcery) to the point that Rincewind is the only one left who knew the Librarian as a human. The Last Continent--Teletran 11:27, 2 March 2007 (CET)

The librarian manages to communicate with only two syllables. Strangely, one is Dutch for also, and the other is Middle English (practically Dutch) for...also, also.--Old Dickens 22:57, 6 May 2007 (CEST)

A further interesting note

I don't remember the full sketch, but there is a Monty Python Sketch 'bout a gorilla librarian. Light allusion to that with THE Librarian...in a way...perhaps?--LilMaibe 17:34, 15 May 2011 (CEST)

Glad to oblige...

Monty Python's Flying Circus invoked this trope in a sketch where a gorilla who is really a man in a gorilla suit is brought to a job interview for the position of chief librarian. The library executives are oddly excited by the idea of having a wild beast for a librarian. Executive (Chapman): "I love seeing the customers come in to complain about some book being damaged and ask to see the chief librarian, and then, you should see their faces when the proud beast leaps from his tiny office, snatches the book from their hands and sinks his fangs into their soft...*beat* AgProv (talk) 22:40, 17 December 2013 (GMT)

The Gorilla Librarian sketch

Lords and Ladies

Why is his appearance in Lords and Ladies only a cameo? I think that he had a more major role. --Confusion 19:25, 20 November 2011 (CET)

Ankh–Morpork slang

In context of Sam Vimes finding something out, a members of Ankh–Morpork city watch (most likely Fred Colon)says: "He'll go totally Librarian...". It probably is a variation on expression "To go ape..." meaning mad or crazy. Probably in "Making Money"

Actually, it was The Fifth Elephant, and the line was "He will go totally Bursar. He will go totally librarian-poo."
I think, anyway.--Stanley Howler 18:56, 29 May 2012 (CEST)

Yet another interesting observation

Too tenuous for an Annotation, but in the 1980's, a story-arc in the 2000AD comic's Judge Dredd strip concerned the election of an orang-utan as Mega-City One's Mayor. Dave the orang-utan came from the city's ethnic and species ghetto populated by intelligent simians - known unkindly as Apetown - and confounded expectations by governing the City more intelligently, wisely and corruption-free than any human politician could manage. Mega-City One is pretty much a futuristic Ankh-Morpork with lots of suspicious similarites - large, sprawling, smelly, polluted and largely inhabited by the lowest common denominator. And Sam Vimes at one point in his policing career was heard to yell out "I Am The Law, you sons of bitches!" So... Terry is familiar with Judge Dredd and Mega-City One? (Hmmm... crossover fanfic... Dredd falls through space-time and ends up in Ankh-Morpork? Carrot visits Mega City One?) AgProv (talk) 19:07, 19 March 2013 (GMT)

Blatant bleeding "in-your-face" obvious observation

I'm the king of the swingers, the jungle VIP; I've reached the top and I gotta stop and that's what's bothering me! King Louis of the apes in The Jungle Book. Who actively wants to be human. Is an orang-utan. Why did I not notice? AgProv (talk) 08:23, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

What's he doing in India, I wonder? --Old Dickens (talk) 15:41, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

The Walt Disney Corportations's usual sterling grasp of fine detail and research, I presume. A "South African" zoologist I happen to know might shake her head in disbelief. AgProv (talk) 14:57, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
