Guild of Butlers, Valets and Gentlemen's Gentlemen
This Guild represents the professional interests of, well, those who valet and buttle. It is a men-only concern: it has yet to open its doors to its gender-peers, senior female servants of a Mrs Whitlow-like disposition and social standing. But whilst being men only, it is remarkably open to men of all species, including Igors. Igors were welcomed as it is understood their job description involves acting as senior domestic servant and effective valet to some very noble and distinguished gentlemen. The illustration of butlers-in-training featured in The Compleat Ankh-Morpork clearly depicts one Dwarf butler, possibly one who will be employed to ease the life of Dwarf nobility, perhaps even royalty.
Whilst invitations for membership are hard to get, the Guild sponsors the training of boys and young men of aptitude for the profession. It is based in Ankh, at Snapcase House, on Snapcase Street, nearby to Snapcase Square (B6). The Guild premises were formerly a principal town dwelling of the Snapcase family, but after the unfortunate demise of the former Patrician, Lord Snapcase, it is believed a lady described as his widow willed the house and freehold to His Lordship's former butler in recognition of services given. The Guild thus enjoys one of the finest Guildhouses in town with an extensive wine cellar and an enviable table. The Guild President is named as a Mr Neattley. In Snuff, Willikins, butler to Lord and Lady Vimes, Duke and Duchess of Ankh, mentions that he is a member of this guild; given his experience, seniority and prestige, it would have been surprising if he wasn't.
