Pangola
Pangola was the supercontinent that used to exist on the Disc before tectonic plate shifts brought about a reformation hundreds of millions of years ago: Pangola split in two, creating Lauragatea and the continent of Howondaland - not to be confused with the country of Howondaland. The Howondaland continent eventually became The Unnamed Continent in the centre of The Discworld and Klatch.
Annotations
Pangola is a parody of the Roundworld theory of Pangaea, the supercontinent that presumably existed during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras about 250 million years ago, before the component continents were separated into their current configuration. The name was coined in the scientific discussion of Alfred Wegener's theory of the Continental drift. In his book The Origin of Continents and Oceans. Pangaea split in two just like Pangola, but it produced Laurasia and Gondwanaland.
Pangola can be one of several things on Roundworld:
- A type of grass (Digitaria eriantha)
- Latin for "all the goals"
- A play on the word 'Pangolin' - a type of armoured mammal of the order Pholidota.
